Good-practice

Background OrigoShift is an innovative project that explores the use of Virtual Reality (VR) technology to make cultural experiences accessible and create new platforms for cultural creators. The project has its roots in Inclubit-360, a technology developed by RISE to include students who cannot physically attend classroom teaching.

The aim of the project is to make cultural experiences, especially performing arts, available in an immersive and interactive way. VR technology allows visitors to freely navigate between different camera angles during live broadcasts, providing a dynamic and engaging experience. OrigoShift is aimed at both accustomed and unaccustomed cultural consumers, with a particular focus on young people, the elderly and people with limited access to culture.

OrigoShift is based on cultural policy objectives and digitisation strategies, with the aim of promoting access to culture for all and exploring new forms of distribution. Research shows that cultural experiences can prevent ill health by providing a sense of coherence and readiness to meet challenges. Through OrigoShift, more people can access culture, which can improve their quality of life.

OrigoShift develops an open source web-based application that enables real-time cultural experiences without data storage. The virtual visitor can choose their own perspective and move around the room, creating a unique experience. The project also explores the possibilities of offering a lab environment where cultural practitioners can test the technology and provide feedback.

RISE plays a central role in the project by coordinating the development of the software and supporting the implementation and testing of the technology. RISE cooperates with various cultural organisations to ensure that the solutions meet the needs of cultural creators.

Results The project has resulted in a web-based application that can be installed and operated locally. The application allows visitors to freely navigate between different camera angles in real time, providing a dynamic and engaging experience. Virtual visitors can interact and talk to each other like 3D avatars.

OrigoShift strives to create new opportunities for the cultural sector by exploiting the potential of VR technology. As the VR industry grows and technology becomes more accessible, the project hopes to offer cultural experiences in new ways that both improve access and engagement. The project also investigates how a digital foyer can be designed to create a social environment for the virtual visitors.

Why is this a good example?

OrigoShift is an excellent example of how innovative technologies can be used to make cultural experiences more accessible and combat social isolation. By offering immersive VR experiences in real time, the project creates new opportunities for both cultural creators and visitors. The open source and flexible application makes the solution adaptable to different needs and environments. The project demonstrates how collaboration between public actors and technical experts can lead to sustainable and innovative solutions that benefit both society and individuals.
