Code4Europe, launched in 2024, is a bold European initiative designed to transform digital education and inspire millions of young people to explore coding, computational thinking, and technology. Supported by €6 million from the DIGITAL-2023-SKILLS-04-BOOSTINGDIGIT – DIGITAL-CSA DIGITAL Coordination and Support Actions, the project aims to empower 25 million Europeans with coding skills within two years.
At its core, Code4Europe seeks to reimagine, revamp, and relaunch EU Code Week, expanding it into a year round movement that reaches deeper into classrooms, communities, and families. The mission is clear: make digital skills accessible to all, strengthen Europe’s digital talent pipeline, and help more young people see a future for themselves in the digital workforce.
A Consortium Built for Impact
The project is coordinated by JA Europe, bringing together a powerful consortium of 41 partners and 4 Associated Partners from more than 20 countries. This diverse network includes:
• National digital innovation authorities
• Educational and training institutions
• NGOs and community organisations
• Technology companies and research bodies
• EU CodeWeek national coordinators and hubs
Together, the consortium is committed to expanding digital opportunities, supporting educators, and building a stronger, more inclusive digital skills ecosystem across Europe.
About EU Code Week
EU Code Week is a grassroots movement that has been inspiring creativity, problem solving, and collaboration since 2013. Supported by the European Commission, it encourages people of all ages especially students to explore coding and digital creation. Its goal is to demystify programming and show that anyone can learn the basics of technology.
Code4Europe builds on this legacy, giving EU Code Week a renewed mandate to drive meaningful change in digital education and significantly increase participation across Europe.
Our Role as Malta’s EU CodeWeek Hub
As the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) and the official EU CodeWeek Hub for Malta, we are proud to contribute to the next chapter of Europe’s digital transformation. The Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA)’s mission is to regulate and enable secure digital innovation through a proactive trustworthy and strategically guided approach. The MDIA’s vision is to be the forward-looking Authority that fosters trust and enables the uptake of innovative technologies. One of the quality objectives of the MDIA is to strengthen digital skills and capabilities of citizens to drive Malta’s digital economy in line with Malta’s eSkills Strategy.
Our work within Code4Europe includes:
• National Outreach & Community Engagement Connecting Maltese schools, educators, NGOs, and youth organisations with Code4Europe resources and activities.
• Supporting Educators Providing access to training, teaching materials, and best practices that help educators confidently integrate coding and digital skills into their classrooms.
• Promoting Digital Literacy & Coding Events Encouraging participation in workshops, coding sessions, and hands on digital learning experiences across Malta.
• Showcasing local digital initiatives and ensuring Malta’s contributions are visible within the wider European movement.
Through these efforts, MDIA helps ensure that digital skills in Malta become broader, earlier, and more inclusive aligning with Europe’s long term digital ambitions.
Driving Europe’s Digital Future
Code4Europe is more than a project, it is a commitment to closing Europe’s digital skills gap by addressing the challenge at its source. By empowering young people, supporting educators, and strengthening community participation, the initiative is helping build a digitally confident generation ready to shape Europe’s future.
