Cody21: Digital Literacy for Primary Schools
- November 6, 2024
- admin
Cody21 helps students in Austrian primary schools build foundational digital skills through interactive learning videos. Each video includes games and tasks specifically designed for children aged eight to ten.
What Does Cody21 Offer?
The Cody21 curriculum consists of 16 interactive video units—eight units per school year or grade—each lasting about 45 minutes.
The lessons are easy to integrate into the primary school curriculum. Teachers only need a laptop with internet access and a projector. Children do not need devices, as printable worksheets in PDF format are provided for all activities.
The videos include explanations, stories, animations, and exercises on topics such as the “Binary System,” “Internet Safety,” and “Artificial Intelligence.” The series aligns with three international standards—K-12 Computer Science Standards and DigComp 2.2 AT—and is pedagogically tailored for third- and fourth-grade students.
Who Is Behind Cody21?
Cody21 was developed by acodemy GmbH, established in Vienna in 2016 as Austria’s first programming school for children.
With financial backing from A1 Digital Campus, Cody21 became a core digital education project for the Vienna School Board. Early adopters in Austria included schools in Linz, with support from the city.
How to Register
Originally a flagship project in Vienna, Cody21 is now available to primary schools across Austria for free.
Schools outside of Austria can purchase an annual subscription, which provides access to all 16 videos, or opt for a three-month trial subscription that includes the first two videos.
What Makes Cody21 a Good Practice Example?
Digital skills are essential in today’s world, and children should begin learning them early to navigate the digital world confidently as adults. By linking complex digital concepts with everyday scenarios, Cody21 helps young learners understand and apply these concepts with ease.
The interactive video series uses age-appropriate materials to engage students in digital topics, guiding them playfully through the digital landscape.
Only minimal technical infrastructure is required, making Cody21 easy for teachers to implement and seamlessly integrate into the classroom.
Acodemy won the 2020 A1 Innovation Awards and was recognized as a leader in innovative digital education, outshining over 20 competitors.
Additionally, acodemy holds the “Family Digital Competence 2019” seal of approval and was nominated for the 2019 Women Entrepreneurs Award. Acodemy’s vision—“Programming as the fourth basic competency”—also impressed the jury on the Austrian show 2 Minuten 2 Millionen.
