Course Description:
This short course equips adult learners with essential skills to navigate the digital world safely and critically. As online environments grow more complex, individuals face increasing risks related to privacy, misinformation, and digital manipulation. Designed for adults with diverse digital experience, the course fosters awareness and resilience through practical demonstrations, guided discussions, and analysis of real-world examples.
A key focus is the growing threat of misinformation, including fake news and deepfakes (AI-generated content that can convincingly alter reality). These tools, often spread via social media, are difficult to detect without strong digital literacy. Contrary to common assumptions, adults, especially those who did not grow up with digital technologies, are often more vulnerable to such manipulation than younger digital natives.
In line with the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act, the course also promotes AI literacy, particularly around the risks posed by AI assistants and agents. These systems, increasingly embedded in everyday digital interactions, can influence decision-making, shape perceptions, and automate responses in ways that are not always transparent or accountable. Learners will explore how these technologies operate, the ethical concerns they raise, and how to critically assess their outputs.
By raising awareness of AI-generated content and the subtle influence of AI-driven systems, the course supports the EU’s goal of fostering a safe, informed, and resilient digital society. Adult learners will leave better equipped to engage with digital technologies thoughtfully and responsibly.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
Log in securely and manage their digital identity responsibly.
Understand how personal data is collected and used by online platforms.
Identify safe and unsafe practices when sharing information online.
Recognise and critically evaluate misinformation, fake news, and AI-generated content.
Conduct secure online banking and access official digital services with confidence.
