NERO Module 1 – The Fundamentals of Cybersecurity provides trainees with a comprehensive, foundational introduction to cybersecurity, helping organisations build robust human-layer defences and establish a proactive security culture.
The module focuses on core security domains, baseline risk assessment, and standard compliance frameworks tailored to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Through structured material and real-world threat analysis, trainees learn how to articulate information security risks, identify typical visual or behavioural indicators of common human-focused attacks, and implement essential daily security hygiene practices to safeguard corporate digital assets.
Registration Information
Participants can register for this module through the NERO Website where they can gain full access to the training materials and training activities. All required tools and resources are available through the NERO Marketplace.
Topics covered
The training covers a structured set of foundational and practical topics, including:
- Definition and Importance of Cybersecurity: Core concepts of protecting data, networks, and digital programs from unauthorised attacks.
- Macro-economic Impact on SMEs: Evaluating the distinct operational, financial, and reputational consequences of security breaches.
- History and Evolution of Cybersecurity: Tracing milestone developments from early firewall creation to major historical exploits.
-
Cybersecurity Domains: Deconstructing the unique requirements of Information, Network, Application, Cloud, and Endpoint Security.
- Key Principles and Frameworks: Deep-diving into the core tenets of the CIA Triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability), the AAA Framework, and Zero Trust Architecture.
- Standards and Corporate Compliance: An introduction to establishing consistent organisational controls.
-
Cybersecurity Roles and Responsibilities: Outlining the distinct professional landscapes and skill sets of Security Analysts, Engineers, and CISOs.
-
Current Cybersecurity Landscape: Analysing the behavioural indicators of modern attack vectors.
- The Future of Cybersecurity: Preparing organisations for the technical defence challenges and opportunities presented by AI, IoT, Blockchain, and Quantum Computing.
These topics are supported by short lectures, demonstrations and video material.
Learning approach
The module follows an interactive learning approach that combines:
- Expert-led presentations introducing key architectural cybersecurity principles, history milestones, and domain responsibilities.
-
Live online training sessions, during which instructors explain regulatory concepts, demonstrate core frameworks, and guide trainees through real-world threat examples.
-
Recorded training materials, including uploaded videos from live sessions, allowing trainees to review theoretical and practical content at their own pace.
-
Quizzes and short knowledge checks to reinforce understanding of key security definitions, attack vectors, and standards.
-
Guided practical demonstrations of network security, threat mapping, and foundational defense tool interfaces in controlled environments.
Learning outcomes
After completing the module, trainees will be able to:
- Explain essential cybersecurity concepts, architectural principles, and foundational best practices.
-
Identify structural and behavioural security weaknesses within SME daily digital workflows.
-
Conduct basic risk mapping activities using standard industry-relevant security frameworks.
- Analyse vulnerability indicators and modern threat patterns affecting endpoint environments.
- Recommend effective and cost-efficient security hygiene remediation strategies.
-
Apply ethical, compliant, and responsible personal data protection practices.
- Contribute to improving the overall human-layer security posture of SMEs.
- Support the development of security awareness programmes within their organisations.
