NERO Module 1 – The Fundamentals of Cybersecurity provides trainees with a comprehensive, foundational introduction to cybersecurity, helping organisations build robust human-layer defences and establish a proactive security culture. 

The module focuses on core security domains, baseline risk assessment, and standard compliance frameworks tailored to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Through structured material and real-world threat analysis, trainees learn how to articulate information security risks, identify typical visual or behavioural indicators of common human-focused attacks, and implement essential daily security hygiene practices to safeguard corporate digital assets.

The training covers a structured set of foundational and practical topics, including:

• Definition and Importance of Cybersecurity: Core concepts of protecting data, networks, and digital programs from unauthorised attacks. 
• Macro-economic Impact on SMEs: Evaluating the distinct operational, financial, and reputational consequences of security breaches.
• History and Evolution of Cybersecurity: Tracing milestone developments from early firewall creation to major historical exploits.

• Cybersecurity Domains: Deconstructing the unique requirements of Information, Network, Application, Cloud, and Endpoint Security. 

• Key Principles and Frameworks: Deep-diving into the core tenets of the CIA Triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability), the AAA Framework, and Zero Trust Architecture.
• Standards and Corporate Compliance: An introduction to establishing consistent organisational controls.

• Cybersecurity Roles and Responsibilities: Outlining the distinct professional landscapes and skill sets of Security Analysts, Engineers, and CISOs. 

• Current Cybersecurity Landscape: Analysing the behavioural indicators of modern attack vectors.
