EU Code Week 2025 Seminar

On Wednesday 15th October, 2025, a group of primary church school educators participated in an engaging professional development seminar at the Malta Digital Innovation Hub.

In collaboration with Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA), the Secretariat for Catholic Education (SfCE), combined expertise and content to support educators with integrating coding into teaching and learning. The SfCE welcomes this collaboration with MDIA as both organisations encourage:
• The formation of ethical and responsible citizens;
• Learning and adaptation in response to technological change, thus promoting lifelong learning;
• Advocating for accessibility and inclusion in the digital transformation process.

Together with Ms Marisa Abela Gatt, Senior Officer (Projects) and Mr Thomas Abela, Manager (Training and Innovation Ecosystems) within MDIA, Ms Roberta Trapani Maggi and Ms Natalie
Lombardi Calleja, Heads of Department for Digital Literacy and Transveral Skills within the Curriculum Entitlement Team at SfCE, discussed possible insightful keynotes and planned ways in
holding interactive sessions to make the seminar a fruitful one for the participant educators.

The seminar, opened with an engaging session by Mr Neil Micallef, Manager (AI Supervision & Marketing Surveillance) within MDIA, who discussed the AI Act and the implications of AI in
education, followed by Ms Marisa Abela Gatt (MDIA), who shared insights on registration, local coding competitions, and the EU Code Week Educators Awards. Subsequently, educators explored
creative, cross-curricular ways to integrate coding, computational thinking, and robotics into teaching and learning. This was carried out through a variety of hands-on workshops featuring 3D
printing, unplugged coding, robotics and Micro:bit challenges.

This seminar was made possible thanks to MDIA personnel, Ms Marisa Abela Gatt, Mr Thomas Abela, Mr Emanuel Briffa, Mr Thomas Owen Attard and Mr Neil Micallef who collaborated fully with the Head of Departments within SfCE and offered a warm welcome to all participants at the Malta Digital Innovation Hub.
