Code Academy: the began
It all began when our founders realized the lack of talent in the IT field in Portugal, but also that this situation coexisted with a major economic crisis, which left a significant portion of the population unemployed – a mismatch that needed to be solved.
Born to address this problem, Academia de Código emerged.
Based on a programming bootcamp, our school has had the goal, from day one, of both addressing the shortage of Tech professionals in the market and creating new career opportunities for bright minds who are unemployed and have no prior knowledge in the field.
Initially, our team worked tirelessly to develop a high-quality yet disruptive teaching method that, to this day, employs strategies that make education more accessible and inclusive, using humor, irreverence, and transparency in favor of learning.
For this reason, the aesthetics of our campuses, the way subjects are approached, and how our trainers, known as “Master Coders,” engage with the students, called “Code Cadets”, all have a distinct and excellent dynamic.
For all these reasons, we are #AllForCodeAndCodeForAll – a motto that unites us and stems from the belief that everyone can learn to code if they are willing to give their best and have the right motivation and spirit.
Knowing that many candidates would not have the financial means to enroll in a bootcamp, we developed partnerships with entities like Banco Montepio, capable of providing scholarships and support so that no talent would be left behind, helping students take the first step towards changing their lives.
However, although the initial focus was on enabling a change for unemployed individuals, nowadays the scenario has changed, and Code Cadets are mainly dissatisfied with their current careers in often stagnant sectors.
Recognizing the potential of the technology industry, they invest 14 weeks of their lives to retrain themselves.
Since 2015, Academia de Código has already trained over 1700 Junior Full-Stack Developers, boasting a 98% employability rate certified by Ernst & Young. Companies such as Deloitte, KPMG, PWC, among other internationally recognized IT sector firms, have Code Cadets working for their institutions and have been recruiting through Academia de Código since the first bootcamp. Despite the project’s growth over the years, we still believe that there is a long way to go in terms of requalification, both nationally and internationally. That’s precisely why we aim to provide talented individuals with the necessary tools to enter the tech industry and help them launch their careers.
