This OECD report focuses on the evolving demands on teaching, which is amplified by a lack of teachers, demographic shifts, and quick technological developments like AI. It identifies declining student performance and rising inequities as growing challenges in education systems, and emphsises the need for strategic actions to address the issues. The report is based on data from 33 education systems and presents insights into recent trends, policy responses, and strategic considerations for the future of education.
Factors such as ageing teacher populations, challenging working conditions, and bad salary competitiveness are amplifying existing teacher shortages across OECD countries. Recommendations of the report include making teacher pathways more versatile, balancing teacher supply and demand, addressing drop-outs in rural and underserved areas in particular, and focusing on teacher retention and empowerment.
The challenges and opportunities of adopting technologies such as AI into education are presented. This report emphasises the importance of evidence-based integration of technology, supporting professional development, and ensuring equitable access.
