The National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics – ICI Bucharest is a leading Romanian public research institution specialising in information and communication technologies (ICT). Established in 1970, it is considered the country’s main centre for research, development, and innovation in informatics and digital technologies.
The institute conducts research and implements projects that support the development of Romania’s digital economy and information society. Its work covers areas such as cybersecurity, cloud computing, big data analysis, smart environments and IoT services, blockchain technologies, and critical infrastructure protection.
ICI Bucharest also collaborates with government institutions, universities, industry, and international partners, contributing to national and European research initiatives. Beyond research, it plays an active role in promoting innovation, digital policy dialogue, and technology adoption, for example by organising events such as the Digital Innovation Summit Bucharest and participating in European technology programmes.
In short, ICI Bucharest functions as a national hub for ICT research and technological development, helping drive Romania’s digital transformation and integration into the European research and innovation ecosystem.
