The Council of Europe is the continent’s leading human rights organisation. Since its foundation in 1949, the organisation has created a common legal space, centred on the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), across its 46 member states. It works to ensure that fundamental rights are protected both offline and in the digital environment. Through its initiatives in education, including digital citizenship, the Council of Europe supports member states in equipping people with the knowledge and skills needed to participate responsibly and safely in today’s digital society.
