International Girls in ICT Day: Empowering Future Innovators

International Girls in ICT Day is a significant annual event aimed at inspiring and empowering young women to pursue careers in information and communication technologies (ICT). Since its inception in 2011 by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), this day has grown into a global movement, focusing on closing the gender gap in the tech industry and promoting a more inclusive and diverse digital future. As the world becomes increasingly reliant on technology, events like International Girls in ICT Day are essential in encouraging young girls to become the digital pioneers of tomorrow.

The 2025 edition of International Girls in ICT Day took place on April 24, under the theme “Girls in ICT for Inclusive Digital Transformation.” This theme emphasizes the importance of inclusivity in the digital age, highlighting the role of young women in shaping a more equitable and accessible technological world. The event seeks to raise awareness of the challenges that girls and women face in accessing ICT education and opportunities. By tackling these obstacles head-on, the event aims to break down stereotypes, encourage more girls to enter the field, and contribute to building a more diverse tech workforce.

Globally, the day is marked with a variety of activities, such as workshops, hackathons, mentorship programs, and talks. These events are designed to provide hands-on experience and foster creative problem-solving, while also offering valuable guidance from seasoned professionals. Such initiatives serve as a platform for young women to gain exposure to the ICT industry, explore their potential, and be inspired by real-world examples of women who have succeeded in this dynamic field.

In Malta, the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) hosted a special event to celebrate International Girls in ICT Day. Because of the Easter school recess the event took place at the Malta Business Registry on May 7th, focusing on the theme “Girls in ICT for Inclusive Digital Transformation.” Girls from various schools, including St Ignatius College, Sacred Heart College, and St Joseph Mater Boni Consilii School, participated in the celebrations.

The program for the day was both inspiring and educational. The event kicked off with a welcome speech by Dr. Jean Mifsud, the Chief Information Technology Officer at MDIA. Following this, Ing. Marthese Vella, the Chief Technical Officer at AX Group, delivered a talk titled “Inspiring You to Shape the Digital Future.” This talk aimed at motivating and encouraging the students to envision themselves as leaders in the tech industry, equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow’s digital world.

In addition to the talks, the event featured an Industry Career Exposure session, where representatives from leading organizations such as Bank of Valletta, Deloitte, EY Malta, MITA, and Tech.mt provided insights into the vast array of career opportunities in ICT. These sessions helped the students understand the different roles within the industry, from technical positions to management and strategy roles, showcasing the wide range of possibilities for young women in the tech world.

The day also included a CoderDojo Workshop, supported by EY Malta, where students got a hands-on experience with coding and software development. The workshop allowed them to explore the exciting world of programming, fostering their curiosity and creativity in a supportive and collaborative environment. Additionally, students were given a guided tour of the Malta Business Registry offices and server room, as well as the BaseCamp facilities, where they saw first-hand how a digital workspace operates.

The participants had the opportunity to network and engage with industry professionals over refreshments, further solidifying the event’s goal of creating lasting connections between young women and the ICT sector. These opportunities are vital in encouraging the next generation of girls to step into the digital world, armed with the knowledge, skills, and inspiration to pursue their passions in ICT.

International Girls in ICT Day serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusion in the digital age. By offering young women the chance to learn, explore, and connect with professionals, we are collectively shaping a future where women are equal participants in the digital transformation. Through initiatives like these, the world will continue to move closer to a more balanced and diverse tech industry, where gender is no longer a barrier to success but a catalyst for innovation.
