I Choose July 2025

I Choose – Nagħżel il-Karriera Tiegħi is an annual Post-Secondary Education Fair organised by Malta’s Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation (MEYR). Its aim is to assist Year 11 students in making informed decisions about their post-secondary education and career paths. ‘I Choose 2025’ was held between the 18th and 19th of July at the Valletta University of Malta Campus.

Students could attend talks establishing the scope and basics of a variety of sectors ranging from engineering to law, and even sports. Amongst the 24 different presentations was ‘Careers in ICT’, held by Mr. Carmel Cachia who introduced students to a variety of potential career opportunities in the ICT sector. As an ever-growing sector that drives innovation worldwide, it has established itself as an indispensable force of our evolving digital society. As such, the talk provided basic overviews of each potential path, as well as established career progression and the necessary skills and aptitudes that ensure success in these professions. The inspirational and aspirational qualities of ICT education were highlighted; most notably through the way its reach has even extended to occupations relating to software, engineering, as well as sales, consultancy and training.

The Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) emphasises the importance of ICT education to achieve the mission of promoting trustworthy and innovative use of technology in Malta. ICT education is important to build skills in digital literacy amongst our population, which is essential for building a defined digital scene that supports evolution in areas such as AI, blockchain and cyber security. The skillset built through ICT education in the local population also helps decrease reliance on foreign experts, increasing Malta’s competitiveness in the global digital economy. Furthermore, a strong foundation in ICT enables Malta to attract investments from foreign companies setting Malta as a leading digital hub. ICT education also ensures that citizens of any age can engage with technology responsibly, whilst understanding the ethical, legal, and security implications of digital tools. With the enhancement of everyone’s skillset, no one is left behind as digital transformation accelerates.

As the world transitions, supranational and national entities have taken it upon themselves to set standards and aspirations for the tech revolution. The EU is no exception as it has taken the initiative to further promote this innovation. As a member state, Malta is also expected to contribute to the EU’s Digital Decade targets including: more ICT specialists in the workforce and increased digital skills in the population. These goals become possible with the increase in ICT students and enhanced education in this sector.

In conclusion, the ‘I choose’ – Naghzel il-karriera Tieghi fair is a strong aid for guiding Maltese students towards potential career paths through a vast range of presentations. Through Mr. Cachia’s ‘Careers in ICT’ presentation, students were exposed to the growing potential of the ICT sector and the skillset needed to succeed in it. With support from national bodies like the MDIA and alignment with EU goals under the Digital Decade initiative, Malta is actively fostering digital literacy and ICT education to build a competitive, inclusive and innovative digital society. This collective effort not only prepares the younger generation for thriving careers but also positions Malta as a dynamic player in the global economy.
