The Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) proudly launches the Second Edition of the Funovation Competition, which celebrates schools in Malta and Gozo that actively engage in EU Code Week by organising creative, inclusive, and impactful digital activities.
Objectives
- Recognise outstanding school participation in EU Code Week.
- Promote creativity, digital skills & computational thinking.
- Recognising quality, innovation, participation, and impact in digital education initiatives.
- Inspire ICT career interest especially among girls.
Competition Period
6th October 2026 – 30th April 2027
Final registration snapshot: 5th May 2027, 12:00 CET
Winner announced: by 31st May 2027
Eligibility
Open to all Primary & Secondary schools in Malta and Gozo.
Eligible Activities
Must:
Be organised by the school and held within the competition period.
Be registered on codeweek.eu by 5th May 2027 (12:00 CET).
Be free, include at least 5 participants, and promote digital creativity, ethics, and innovation.
MDIA-funded/organised activities are not eligible.
Award Criteria
The winning school will be determined by an Evaluation Board based on the following assessment criteria:
- Number of verified EU Code Week activities (35%)
- Quality and innovation (30%)
- Student participation and reach (20%)
- Demonstrated impact (15%)
A Final Report with supporting evidence is mandatory and forms an integral part of the assessment process.
Prize
€5,000 Award
Used only for educational hardware/software that enhances digital learning.
Not for personal devices, gifts, or entertainment.
School must display an MDIA sponsorship plaque.
Reporting & Follow-Up
- Participating schools shall submit a Final Report with supporting evidence in a format prescribed by the MDIA.
- The Final Report shall form an integral part of the assessment process and will be reviewed by the Evaluation Board.
- Schools requiring assistance with activity registration, verification, eligibility, or any other aspect of the Competition are encouraged to contact the MDIA via funovation.mdia@mdia.gov.mt well in advance of the applicable deadlines, as requests submitted close to a deadline may not allow sufficient time for support or clarification.
- The MDIA may request clarification, supplementary information, or supporting documentation at any stage of the Competition.

Termination
MDIA may reclaim the award if funds are misused, or guidelines breached. Schools bear full responsibility and must indemnify MDIA against claims.
