eSkills Malta Foundation Sparks Tech Passion in Year 7 Female Students

On Monday, January 29, 2024, the eSkills Malta Foundation initiated a series of targeted ICT talks for Year 7 female students, marking a deliberate endeavour to inspire and empower young minds. The first session was organised at St. Margaret College Middle School in Bormla, featuring Ms. Rianne Azzopardi, a third-year student pursuing a software development degree at the University of Malta and serving as the Vice President of ICTSA (ICT Students’ Association).

Approximately 80 students attended the talk, where Ms. Azzopardi shared her journey, experiences, and insights into the world of software development. The interactive and captivating presentation sought to unveil the mysteries of the field, highlighting the thrilling possibilities within the realm of technology. One of the critical aims of organizing such ICT talks for young females is to expose them to the world of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at an early age. Research indicates that introducing girls to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) fields in their formative years can profoundly impact their future career choices.

The talk also discussed gender stereotypes and how they can influence career choices, particularly as students approach Year 8. By providing female students with early exposure to ICT talks and successful role models like Ms Azzopardi, the eSkills Malta Foundation aims to break down stereotypes and encourage broader consideration of career options.

The foundation hopes to inspire a new generation of female tech leaders through events like these. By fostering interest and confidence in ICT-related fields early, the students will be better equipped to make informed and empowered career choices.
