How to ensure a skills-based future for European competitiveness

As part of a special series ‘The EU’s path to 2030’, this CEPS publication delves into the EU skills gap and what strategies can be employed to aim to close it in order to boost competitiveness in Europe. It highlights key skills needed for the digital and green transitions. Digital skills development is emphasised for sustaining the EU’s economic resilience, supporting innovation, and maintaining competitiveness in a global market.

In light of rapid technological developments and implementations, the EU needs to make sure workers are equipped with the right digital skills to drive innovation and growth in order for the EU economy to remain competitive. To be able to successfully do so, the EU needs to identify future skills demands in relation to digital skills in particular.

The publication recommends putting focus on adult education, customising policies to SMEs, which are a crucial part of the job market but often lack resources to re- and upskill their workers, and boosting digital competences across all sectors.
