Education at a Glance 2024

This report by the OECD analyses global educational trends, emphasising that digital skills are increasingly essential for both education and employment, particularly in light of the rising reliance on technology in different workplaces. However, there are many imbalances in digital competencies based on socio-economic, gender, and geographic factors.

The report points out the urban-rural divide, which suggests that access to digital education and resources is unevenly distributed, possibly due to lack of infrastructure and educational funding limitations in rural regions. Furthermore, the report notes that there is a gender divide when it comes to advanced digital skills, particularly in advanced technology usage. This digital divide may hinder women’s access to higher-paying, technology-driven roles.

To close the current skills gaps, the OECD calls for teaching digital literacy from early childhood education, support and resources for disadvantaged schools and communities, and targeted policies to address gender and socio-economic inequalities in both education and employment outcomes. Increasing the support for these underprivileged groups could help bridge the gap and ensure that young people across all backgrounds are equipped with the necessary skills for future careers.
