Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) offer graduates a wide range of career opportunities, but are often overlooked in favour of larger organisations. This course introduces learners to the SME job market, exploring how these organisations recruit, what employers look for in graduates, and the workplace culture and career development opportunities they offer.
About the course
Learners will discover how to research SMEs, identify relevant opportunities, showcase their skills and prepare targeted applications. It also explores practical strategies for connecting directly with employers, including networking and speculative applications, as well as the impact of remote and hybrid working on SME recruitment.
Drawing on the expertise of the University of York’s Careers and Placements team, the course provides practical insights to help graduates build confidence, strengthen their employability and navigate opportunities within the SME sector.
Course Structure
- Week 1: Introducing Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises- You will explore the role of SMEs in the job market, learn how they are defined and what employers look for in graduates. The week also introduces key employability skills and examines how remote and hybrid working are changing the way SMEs operate and recruit.
- Week 2: Researching, Applying and Working- You will learn how to identify and research SME employers, prepare effective job applications and showcase your skills and experience. The week also explores speculative applications, onboarding and what to expect when starting work in an SME.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
- Describe what constitutes an SME and recognise the range of employment opportunities available within this sector.
- Engage effectively with SME employers through approaches such as networking and speculative applications.
- Research SMEs and gain insights into their culture, values, working environment and business needs.
- Apply for roles within the SME market by effectively communicating their skills and experience and developing targeted speculative applications.
