Minecraft Education Challenge: Malta Competition

Minecraft has evolved far beyond its gaming roots. In classrooms across the globe, it is now a dynamic educational tool that fosters creativity, collaboration, and computational thinking. Malta is embracing this potential with a bold new initiative: the Minecraft Education Challenge: Malta Competition, launched during EU CodeWeek 2025.

On 28th October 2025, the Malta Digital Innovation Authority partnered with the Directorate for Digital Literacy & Transversal Skills (DDLTS) to host a Minecraft training session at DiHubMT, located within MDIA’s premises. Led by Mr. Steve Tirchett from DDLTS, the session welcomed educators into the immersive world of Minecraft Education. Dr. Omar Seguna (Education Officer, DDLTS) also shared insights on Minecraft’s educational value.

What’s the Minecraft Education Challenge about?
Organised by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) in partnership with Gaming Malta, Microsoft, and the DAIGON Esports Team, this national competition invites students to dive into coding and digital storytelling through Minecraft Education Edition.
The initiative is delivered in collaboration with the Directorate of Digital Literacy and Transversal Skills and the Secretariat for Catholic Education, reinforcing Malta’s commitment to innovative, inclusive education.
The challenge is open to three age categories:
• Primary Schools (ages 7–11)
• Middle Schools (ages 12–14)
• Upper Secondary (ages 14+)

Each winning team will secure a €1,500 prize for their school, dedicated to enhancing digital literacy—whether through hardware, software, or training. The funds are non-transferable and must directly benefit the school community.

Why Minecraft?
Minecraft Education Edition transforms learning by:
• Encouraging creativity and design thinking
• Promoting problem-solving and critical thinking
• Supporting collaboration and communication
• Enhancing digital literacy
• Adapting to diverse learning needs
When paired with coding, Minecraft becomes a powerful tool for teaching programming concepts; students automate tasks, build interactive worlds, and solve challenges using code.

CodeWeek Meets Crafting
EU CodeWeek celebrates coding as a fun, inclusive skill for all. Minecraft aligns perfectly with this mission by:
• Promoting creativity and collaboration
• Developing computational thinking
• Inspiring future innovators

During CodeWeek, schools across Europe host Minecraft coding challenges that blend teamwork, storytelling, and digital skills. As an active member of EU CodeWeek, Malta is deepening its commitment to digital education by launching its own national competition to empower students to code, create, and collaborate through Minecraft Education Edition.
Teachers can register their school’s participation by 23rd November 2025. This is more than a competition! It is an opportunity to ignite curiosity, foster innovation, and empower students through the transformative power of coding.
