In the framework of the European project FREEDOM (Fake News Recognition and Education for Elderly Digital Outreach Mission), which aims to enhance the digital literacy of people over 65 to protect older people from fake news, the Center for Lifelong Learning INNOVATION successfully conducted educational visits to the Open Protection Center for the Elderly of Makrihori and Rapsani.

Awareness of disinformation

During the actions, members of the structures were informed about the risks of disinformation, especially that created using artificial intelligence, and became familiar with simple and practical tools for detecting fake news. Participation was particularly strong, confirming the need for such interventions that promote the safe and active participation of older people in the digital world.

A few words about the FREEDOM project

The FREEDOM project is a European initiative funded by the Erasmus+ programme through the Italian National Agency and is implemented by the cooperation of three partners:

  • Le Tre Ghinee (Italy)
  • KAINOTOMIA (Greece)
  • SOLUTION: Solidarité & Inclusion (France)

The duration of the project extends until 2025, covering 18 months of intensive cooperation and implementation of educational actions, aiming at:

  • Empowering the digital skills of older people
  • Recognising and countering disinformation
  • Access to educational material specially designed for the elderly

Project actions include:

  • Local workshops and on-site trainings
  • Multilingual platform with video, tools and manual (e-book)
  • Easy-to-use video tutorials for mobile and computers
  • Tips for recognizing trustworthy news and avoiding digital traps
