On 28th March, nineteen enthusiastic Year 6 students from Mater Boni Consilii School stepped into the world of coding at EY Malta, taking part in an exciting CoderDojo session in collaboration with the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA). This hands-on event introduced young learners to coding through Scratch, a colourful and intuitive platform designed specifically for beginners.
But what exactly is CoderDojo?
CoderDojo is a global movement of free, volunteer-led programming clubs for young people. These clubs aim to make coding fun, creative, and accessible. Instead of traditional classroom teaching, participants learn through experimentation, collaboration, and practical projects—building games, animations, and stories with code. The focus is on discovery and confidence, not just syntax.
So, why target this age group?
Introducing coding at a young age helps children develop essential skills early on logical thinking, problem solving, and resilience. Coding also fosters creativity, empowering students to bring their ideas to life digitally. By starting early, we plant the seeds for future careers in technology and help ensure children grow up not just consuming technology but understanding and shaping it.
Events like this also support wider goals of digital inclusion and gender equality in tech. Encouraging girls to explore coding in a supportive, fun environment can help address the gender imbalance in STEM fields. During this session, students not only tackled coding challenges but also presented their final projects with pride, earning certificates of participation in a celebration of their achievements.
The event was made possible thanks to the collaboration between EY Malta, MDIA, and the Curriculum Entitlement Team from the Secretariat for Catholic Education. EY Malta’s support in hosting the session reflects its commitment to community engagement and digital education. Meanwhile, MDIA continues to champion digital innovation and literacy across Malta, working to ensure the next generation is well-prepared for a rapidly changing digital world.
The room was filled with energy, creativity, and the excitement of discovery proving that coding doesn’t need to be complex or intimidating. With the right tools and encouragement, young learners can achieve remarkable things.
As part of #AllDigitalWeeks and #EUCodeWeek, this CoderDojo event highlighted the power of partnerships in creating impactful, educational experiences. Here’s to more moments of inspiration and to a future led by digitally empowered youth.
