DigComp 2.2 is an updated version of the Digital Competence Framework for Citizens, developed by Riina Vuorikari, Stefano Kluzer, and Yves Punie. The framework aims to help individuals, educators, and organisations, understand, and improve digital skills in a rapidly evolving digital world. It focuses on providing a clear structure for assessing and developing the digital competences that are increasingly vital in modern life.
The DigComp 2.2 framework outlines five key areas of digital competence:
- Information and Data Literacy: This area covers the ability to search for, evaluate, and manage digital information. For example, knowing how to distinguish between credible sources and misinformation online is a vital skill.
- Communication and Collaboration: This area involves using digital tools to communicate, interact, and collaborate with others. An example might be using online platforms like Microsoft Teams or Zoom for remote work or learning.
- Digital Content Creation: This refers to creating and editing digital content in various formats, such as text, images, and videos. For instance, producing a blog post or creating a video tutorial using basic editing tools falls under this category.
- Safety: This area focuses on protecting devices, data, and privacy online. Understanding how to set strong passwords, avoid phishing scams, and protect personal information online are essential skills here.
- Problem Solving: This involves identifying digital needs and solving technical issues. For example, troubleshooting software problems or finding innovative ways to use technology for everyday tasks is crucial.
The updated version, DigComp 2.2, introduces new examples of knowledge, skills, and attitudes to reflect current digital trends. For example, in Information and Data Literacy, recognising deepfake videos has become a relevant skill. In Safety, understanding the basics of data encryption is increasingly important. The framework also emphasises the need for a positive attitude towards digital learning and adaptability to new technologies.
DigComp 2.2 is an essential tool for citizens aiming to stay relevant in the digital age. It provides a roadmap for building the digital skills needed to thrive in both personal and professional environments.
